WHAT IS THE IDEAL WEIGHT?
Doctors say it is being the right weight relative to your height! Your body mass index (BMI)
Some people who are overweight (according to that criteria), live long, happy and healthy lives.
Others who appear underweight also live long, happy and healthy lives.
And some of those who are the ideal weight also live long and happy lives.
Some people who are overweight do not have a problem with their weight others do.
Some people who are normal/under weight have extreme problems with their weight e.g. Anorexia Nervosa.
So we arrive at a situation where some overweight people see themselves as being (or feeling)
normal and some normal people see themselves as being grossly overweight.
So is weight the real issue?
Well yes and no!
Sometimes weight is a problem and others it's a symptom of a problem.
SO,
WHAT'S THE SOLUTION?
Well, that is a good question! If it was easy to be the ideal weight there wouldn't be such a multi £billion
industry built around it.
Very often gaining control of our weight is understanding the true nature of the problem or symptom!
How can we gain control of our weight?
Well the truth is we are in control of our weight! Unless of course you are being force fed or accidentally
overeat on a daily basis. We control (as adults) what we eat, when we eat it, how often, how little, how much.
We eat for very different reasons and all too often it has nothing to do with the ingestion of food for the
sole purpose of survival of the species (our instinctual drives).
- Some people eat for comfort
- To mask deep emotional issues
- To make themselves unattractive
- To make themselves attractive
- To fulfil the desires of another person
- To be accepted
- To be loved
- Because they like eating
- Because they like food
- You name it they'll eat it!
- So on and so forth!
SO HOW CAN HYPNOSIS HELP?
Well, Hypnosis allows us better access to the unconscious mind where, often, we find the cause of the underlying
reasons for the problem. Very often when a person understands at an intellectual level what the emotional responses are, in
relationship to their weight, they are well on the way to a solution.
The mind body connection has a very active part in the dietary process. If we suddenly reduce our food intake
our metabolic rate slows down. The mind/body senses deprivation and takes a defensive stance, it starts to store (fat mainly)
food reserves, in much the same way a squirrel buries nuts, it senses a long winter coming!
SO WHAT'S THE ANSWER?
Well I believe in re-educating our minds about the way we eat, its real purpose in our daily survival. Learn
to eat what we need most of the time -rather than what we want all of it. And this does not mean eating like a rabbit. It
is possible to have fun in our eating without it being detrimental to our life.
When we change the focus of our
eating to physical survival, rather than satiety we have move from effect to cause to cure.
